Mr. M.I.A.

How's it going everybody? That's right, it's your old friend T shooting a blog out at ya. I know what you're thinking. "Where has he been?" Well the answer is, I've been pretty busy with work and...yeah, that's about it. Basketball season has started and we started out pretty well with a 2-2 start, but have since fallen to 3-8. It's pretty rough. Lots of talent on the team, just the mentality is not what it needs to be. It's frustrating really, but I'm hoping the players pull together and work through it and realize they are better than everyone gives them credit for.

Christmas was a little bit of a bust for me. It was a little sad because I didn't get the opportunity to get home, but the good thing was that I was able to drive to LA and visit with family there. That was a good time. It was bitter-sweet, however, because it was my first Christmas away from home. It was was strange.

New Year's was pretty nice. I just went out with some friends here in Yuma and hit a bar. Not too much going on, just a lot of drunk crazy people, not to mention bad karaoke. But, what can you do but go with the flow.

I'll try to get back on here later and drop some more info, but until then. I'm out!

Recap...

Wow!! I can't believe it's been over a month already since I last put anything on here. I guess time really does get away from us every once in a while. Well, let's see if I can put a quick recap on things...

School is going pretty well. There was a little "drama" with class schedules there for a few days toward the beginning of school. I was teaching three Physical Training classes (team teaching with another teacher in one of them), but the administrators decided to pull me out of that one and create another PE class to help with the huge class sizes in other PE classes. So, now I'm teaching a PE class along with the two PT classes.

Overall, the classes are going great! Progress Reports (midterms) were just posted the week before last, and I think the lowest grade in all three classes was a low C, or high D (only because of attendance issues for those students). There haven't been too many disciplinary problems and for the most part, the kids all work hard. I love it.

Basketball is quickly approaching. I started running an open-gym for all boys and girls interested in playing ball two mornings a week. We're pulling in around 15-20 students on average, so a pretty good turn out if you ask me. Also, both me and the boys head coach stay after school on those days and do voluntary basketball conditioning. As you can imagine, all of this keeps me pretty busy.

I keep talking out new ideas for this season with my two assistant coaches. We're all really excited about the possibilities and challenges of the upcoming season. Last year, I was new to the school and the program, and I only had two weeks to prep for the season. It's a lot better being able to plan 2 months in advance, haha.

Now, for the personal side...some friends and I took a trip to Phoenix last weekend to catch a couple of D-Backs games vs. the Cardinals. It was an awesome time, even though the Cardinals lost both games we were at. But, on the other hand they were still awesome games. They both felt like playoff baseball. It was great!

I'm an Uncle for the 4th time over now. My sister C- gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Veronica. She sent pics out to the family, and all I have to say is, Thank God she looks like her mom! :P

Oh yeah, and finally...IT'S FINALLY FOOTBALL SEASON and my 49ers are 2-0!!! Yeah! I know it's early, but still let me have my celebration where I can. I've gotten my butt pounded in fantasy league so far. Of course, when Carson Palmer throws for over 400yds and 6TD's...what do you expect. :/ Oh well, it's all good. Well, I'm out. Peace!!

Cards win 3 of last 4

The cards having a very dismal season. They have had devastating injury after injury and they have not been able to get anything substantial going. However, the season is not without it's bright spots.

Albert Pujols is showing his average numbers with a .311 BA, 24 bombs, and 75 RBI's. Chris Duncan is following close with 20 round-trippers, and 59 RBI's as of Aug. 11. Another shining spot the last few games has been the unlikely return of former pitcher, Rick Ankiel. Light's out pitcher who lost his control and couldn't find the plate last year, returns to MLB as an outfielder for the Cards in a BIG way.

In the last three games, he's hit 3 homeruns (2 in today's game alone) not to mention outstanding defensive play in rightfield. Do I expect him to keep up this performance on a consistant basis? No, but he's definitely turning some heads. Mine included.

The Yanks have done it again!

Once again the New York Yankees have proven they are the true thugs of baseball. Last night, a brawl broke out between the Yanks and Jays that cleared the benches, not once, but TWICE! Caused in no small part by A-Rod getting hit by a pitch, then Clemens going after a Blue Jays hitter later in the game.

HELLO!!! It's baseball!! What do think is going to happen when a guy is throwing a 90 mile/hr fastball toward you. Sometimes, you're going to get hit! It's a chance every ball player faces throughout their career from little league, on up to the Majors. DEAL WITH IT!!!

Man-up A-Rod! So you got hit, take your base like a man instead of whining and having words with the pitcher. I played ball for over 10 years, and I have been beaned plenty of times. Often in my mid/late-teens by pitchers throwing low-to-mid 80's. Yeah, it's no picnic...but you get a base out of it. Suck it up, and play the game!!

Clemens...yeah, he was protecting his "own." How'd that work out for him? Oh yeah, he got tossed. That made a lot of sense then didn't it?

What happened to the days when professional athletes were supposed to be role-models? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Say It Ain't So, Reggie!!!

If you've read my friend Shane's blog, you probably know where I'm gonna go in regard to the Reggie Miller rumors about the possibility of him signing with the Boston Celtics. Granted, the Celtics have completely revamped their roster over the offseason with blockbuster deals like aquiring Ray Allen from Seattle, and after a long drawn-out process, getting K.G. from the T-wolves. Those two all-stars combined with Paul Pierce only spells out one thing, Playoff (possible Championship) bound. But, I will agree with Shane that Reggie will have to be out of his mind to sign with them.

He had played his entire career with one franchise. That kind of loyalty is RARE, on both sides of the equation (team and player). He played above such personal desires like changing teams just for the chase of a ring. I'm reminded of Karl Malone and Gary Peyton, just to name a couple. His leadership, his character, everything he worked hard for and established in the hearts and minds of the die-hard Pacers fan will have fallen apart. The ONLY way I would approve of him coming back, would be if he signed with the Pacers.

J.O. has undoubtedly proven completely incapable of leading the team. Whether it's on or off the court, he's just as reckless as Jamaal Tinsley trying to dribble the ball. Reggie, he had heart...he played with fire, pure emotion...three attributes that are commonly tossed aside for a larger salary or a shiny ring.

I'm sure he's more than capable of returning. In fact, I'm sure he can still school over half of the shooting guards/small forwards in the league, but what would be the point of him coming back? He left the game with class, with dignity, and with the respect of not only Pacers fans, but basketball fans everywhere. I fear that if he returns, he will have shattered that image. Reggie's place in the Hall is guaranteed...he's had more clutch moments than any sharpshooter in history (can you say Superman?). What more does he have to prove? You're a Pacer Reg...don't sell out!

756 - no asterisk

Well, history has been made. The era of performance enhancing drugs is in full-swing (no pun intended) and we have the broken records to prove it. Barry Bonds, in the midst of controversy and on a night that made even the most uninterested people watch, made history with one solid swing of his bat. Crushing a ball well over 420' over the right-centerfield wall in San Francisco.

We all know the allegations against Bonds due to the BALCO investigation, and blah, blah, blah. But the question is, does he deserve the record? In my humble opinion, he does not. Do I believe the record to be "tainted," as ESPN put it? No, I don't...at least not for the reasons everyone thinks. It is true he still must swing the bat, and of course he's a very talented player. He's one of the best hitters in history, there's no question. After all, he's got the numbers and now the record to prove it. But I, and most other realistic baseball fans know it's true that many other players take some form of performance enhancing substance but that doesn't justify doing something illegal. If you (meaning anyone) can't play the game with class and moral fiber, don't play!

One little factoid, according to ESPN, was Bonds (while in his "prime") never hit more than 50 homeruns in a single season. Then, at 36 years of age and his career beginning to fade, he breaks out for a miraculous 73 bombs. Amazing coincidence, huh? Sure McGwire and Sosa showed the same pattern, but even they had their "advantages." McGwire had is "Andro-" and Sosa had is loaded bat. Of course, baseball never officially found any basis for these findings at the time, but it came out a couple seasons after the fact.

In defense of Bonds, this pattern of behavior and "alleged" substance abuse has been going on LONG before Barry and "the chase." Can we all remember Darryl Strawberry? Doc Gooden, anyone? Honestly, the whole issue has been overlooked far too long, and now it's almost too late. C'mon Selig, grow a pair, would ya?

Getting back on point, the record. I'm all for breaking records. After all, they are made to be broken but only if they are done the right way, by being EARNED and not gift-wrapped (like the fateful pitch on Aug. 7th in S.F.). I've watched the footage, and I gotta tell you...Barry put a helluva swing on that ball. He crushed it, no doubt about it...of course what do you expect when the pitcher places a belt-high fastball down the pipe? Hmmm? If you will be so kind to humor me and if you can, watch the footage again, you will see the Nats' catcher set up on the outside corner for a low-and-away pitch. The pitch came, the catcher shifted, the ball was hit...yet where did the pitcher look? He didn't even turn around to watch the ball. Now, if you're a ball player, especially a pitcher...what is the FIRST reaction (maybe second if you think "oh SH-") after someone hits a fly ball? You FOLLOW the flight trail, the pitcher made no such effort. He knew exactly what he did. He gave Bonds a BP fastball to hit and Barry did not disappoint.

Great job Barry!!! Congrats to the new homerun "king." Although, your record won't last nearly as long as Aaron's (33 years, if memory serves). I give it 10...15 years tops.

Background

Hello Friends-
Well, I've been reading various blogs that belong to friends of mine so, I figured why not join the club and start my own? So many things of interest are going on in the world today, things that I have opinions over. I enjoy reading and/or hearing other's opinions, why not get mine out there too?

First, here's a little about me. I'm 27 years old and I'm a high school Physical Education teacher and Basketball Coach. If there is anyone out there (and I know there is) that thinks Physical Education is glorified recess let me tell you, you are DEAD WRONG!!! Obviously, you've never seen a REAL Physical Education class. I'd be happy to properly educate you sometime.

I'm teaching at a school near the Arizona-Mexico border, near Yuma, Arizona. I've been here for about a year now. I am originally from California, meaning I was born there...but I guess you can say that I call Indiana "home."

I love sports!!! Playing them, as well as watching and coaching. The excitement, the drama, the suspense, the strategy, the glory, just everything but you'll find that out in considerable detail as we go along.

Movies-uh, yeah. Gotta love them. Especially since 99% of my friends worked, or still work for movie theaters. I worked for a couple for six years, on and off. I finally gave up the movie theater "career" when I landed my first "full-time" teaching job almost four years ago. My how time flys!

There is a lot more info with regard to interests, activities, and personal views but I guess you'll have to wait and find them as we journey together. One thing, with regard to this blog, there are no guarantees when I'll be able to post. Once a day, or once a week...who knows? We'll just have to wait and see.
